Scope disputes are almost never about dishonesty. They are about assumptions. The customer assumed something was included, the company assumed it obviously was not, and nobody said it out loud.
This is the list of things that generally fall outside a residential cleaning scope, with the reason for each. Some are negotiable additions. Several genuinely are not, and knowing which is which before you book is worth more than any discount you might negotiate afterwards.
Heavy lifting and moving furniture
Cleaners will move what can be safely shifted by hand — a dining chair, a light side table, a rug. They will not move sofas, armoires, beds, refrigerators or washing machines.
The reason is straightforward: injury risk to the person doing it, and damage risk to your floors and the appliance itself. Sliding a loaded refrigerator across a wood floor is how floors get gouged and water lines get pulled.
If you want behind something specific cleaned, move it yourself before the visit, or ask whether the company will do it as an arranged addition with appropriate equipment.
Work at height
Standard residential cleaning happens at reachable height, which in practice means what a person can access from the floor or a small step stool.
Two-story entrance light fixtures, high vaulted ceilings, exterior second-floor windows and anything needing a full ladder are excluded almost everywhere. This is an insurance and safety boundary rather than an unwillingness — working at height is a different risk category and usually a different qualification.
Specialist trades that look like cleaning
These come up most often at move-out, when a lease requires something the customer assumed a cleaner would handle.
- Carpet shampooing and steam extraction — different equipment and a different trade
- Mold remediation — a health and building issue, not a surface issue
- Pest control — licensed work
- Duct and HVAC cleaning — cleaners dust vent covers, which is not the same thing
- Paint touch-ups, filling nail holes and drywall repair
- Window exteriors above ground level
Biohazards and anything hazardous
Bodily fluids, animal waste beyond routine litter areas, needles, and hoarding-condition properties fall outside residential cleaning and into specialist remediation.
This is not squeamishness. It requires different protective equipment, different training and different disposal procedures, and a standard residential team is not equipped or insured for it.
The same applies to construction debris in any real volume — a post-construction clean covers dust and residue, not hauling away waste.
Personal tasks that are not cleaning
Laundry, dishes, organizing, decluttering, running errands, childcare and pet care are not part of a cleaning scope, though some companies will do small courtesies.
Organizing deserves a specific mention because it is so often conflated with cleaning. A cleaner works surfaces; an organizer decides where your belongings should live. Booking a cleaning visit for a clutter problem produces a frustrating result for everyone, because the visit gets spent moving objects rather than cleaning.
Damage, which cleaning cannot reverse
This is the most common source of disappointment, and it is not really an exclusion — it is a limit of what cleaning is.
Etched or acid-marked stone, permanently discolored grout, scratched glass, heat damage, worn or stripped finishes and failing sealant will not clean out. Cleaning improves how they look. It does not undo them, and anyone telling you otherwise has not seen the surface.
Ask, and a good cleaner will walk you round and point out which marks are damage rather than dirt. That is the useful answer, even though it is the less flattering one. Anybody who tells you the whole bathroom will look new is selling you the visit rather than describing it.
What is usually available if you ask
Plenty of the tasks people assume are excluded are simply not in a standard scope, and can be added with notice.
Inside the oven and refrigerator, inside cabinets and drawers, interior windows, blinds dusted slat by slat, a garage floor sweep, patio and balcony sweeping, and laundry-area detail are all commonly available additions.
The one condition is timing. These take time, and time has to exist in the schedule — which means asking at booking rather than when the team is already at your door.
